Antiquities
Egyptian Late Period, c. 600 BC
A vibrant mask composed of genuine ancient Egyptian mummy beads, dating to approximately 600 BC. The mask is assembled from green, blue, yellow, black and red circular and tubular faience beads, whose original colours are remarkably well preserved. Egyptian faience — a material between ceramic and glass, made from crushed, fired quartz — was prized in antiquity for its lustrous glaze and vivid colouration. Such bead masks were placed over the face of the mummified deceased as part of the elaborate funerary rites of ancient Egypt.
