Egyptian Late Period, 664–332 BC
An ancient Egyptian carved wood mask from a sarcophagus, dating to the Late Period (664–332 BC). Measuring 9 inches high by 13.5 inches wide, this substantial mask was originally affixed to the exterior of a wooden coffin, providing the deceased with an idealised face for eternity. The carving shows the serene, forward-gazing expression typical of Egyptian funerary art. The mask displays ancient wear and losses consistent with its considerable age, but remains in good overall condition.
