Hoi An Shipwreck — Blue & White Brush Pots

Vietnamese Blue & White Ceramics, c. 1450 AD

A pair of blue-and-white ceramic brush pots recovered from the Hoi An Shipwreck, a 15th-century Vietnamese trading vessel discovered off the coast of central Vietnam in 1997. Dating to approximately 1450 AD, these pieces were produced in the kilns of Chu Dau and represent the flourishing Vietnamese ceramic trade during the late Le Dynasty. The cobalt-blue decoration on white ground reflects the strong influence of Chinese Ming Dynasty porcelain traditions, adapted with distinctly Vietnamese motifs. The Hoi An cargo, numbering over 250,000 ceramics, was officially salvaged and auctioned by Butterfields in 2000.
