Hoi An Shipwreck — Peony Plate

Vietnamese Blue & White Ceramic, c. 1450 AD

A blue-and-white ceramic plate with a central peony medallion, recovered from the Hoi An Shipwreck. The plate displays a boldly painted peony blossom surrounded by scrolling leaves, with a cavetto band of floral sprays and a plain rim. The underglaze cobalt decoration demonstrates the high artistic quality of Vietnamese ceramics produced for the international maritime trade. The peony, symbolising wealth and honour in East Asian culture, was among the most popular decorative motifs of the period.
