mr clement — LAPIN with Golden Bird

mr clement (b. 1980, Hong Kong — based in Tokyo)

mr clement is a sculptor and painter whose practice draws inspiration from comics, popular culture, and the Old Masters. Born in Hong Kong in 1980, he moved to London in 2004 and is currently based in Tokyo. His main character LAPIN — a melancholic seeker in the form of a rabbit — has become one of the most recognisable figures in contemporary art-toy culture.

This sculpture belongs to the celebrated LAPIN series, in which the rabbit appears as an allegorical figure navigating the tension between innocence and experience, tenderness and defiance. Here, LAPIN holds aloft a golden bird — a gesture that speaks of aspiration, sacrifice, and the eternal human desire to possess something precious and transcendent.

The contrast between the matte white of the rabbit and the gleaming gold of the bird creates a visual tension that draws the eye and holds it. mr clement’s minimalist aesthetic, enriched by his deep study of classical art, gives the work a quiet gravitas that belies its playful surface. As the artist himself states: ‘I want my sculptures to communicate complex emotions purely based on their form, without dependence on captions or titles.’
